Solebay House

“I want a house that reminds me of my Grandmother’s house and my summers in Jamestown growing up” the owner said at our first meeting. This Washington, DC couple had owned the Jamestown water front lot for sometime and were ready to build their retirement home. Features important to them: a big waterside porch for the views and evening breezes, an open kitchen-dining-living room to cook and entertain their friends, guest rooms for their friends who snore. Open airy space for items they had collected from their world travels along with things they had found/salvaged such as the old wall hung sink from the grandmother’s house, reclaimed french doors, the old front door from a former house they loved, beach stones for the fireplace, and a timber washed ashore for the mantel.

The designed evolved into a ‘Jamestown’ shingle style house, simple in plan and detail but the elements which are typical of the beach houses along the east shore in Jamestown. The interiors are a mixture of mementos and memories the couple have collected over a life time all brought together in an updated ‘Grandmother’s house’ in Jamestown.
